Hmm given his audience I don't think he was targeting depth; I think he wanted to a) highlight some nice integration of existing data, and b) challenge our (his audience's) preconceptions. He certainly challenged some of mine!
As for reading about equality, I am capable of that. No doubt I shall dip my toes in your links some day.
