The Playing Field

Phil Miller gets it exactly right.

Speaking of leveling the playing field: in my union, once a faculty member is hired, he is placed on a salary grid for the term of his employment. Each year, he moves up one step on the salary grid regardless of how hard he works.

Consider two economics professors who start their careers at the same pay. If 1 publishes 10 articles in tier-1 economic journals, edits a prestigious journal, serves as department chair, and wins teacher of the year twice, all in a 10 year period, and the other does nothing, both professors will end the period with the same base pay. The playing field is level, but it's anything but fair (nor is it efficient).

He leads, again so correctly, with a reference to my beloved compatriot.
It should be clear by now that the Democrats have used the current economic crisis as a front to help them pass legislation that they've waited years to pass. It's their own little brand of shock therapy.

I fear for the long-term health of the US economy.
