Do you assert that an artist ought to receive special treatment? Would an ingenious Nazi deserve to live out his life in peace? What does the special treatment of artists have to do with democracy? Explain what ingeniousness, filmmaking, and democracy have to do with your proposed rule.

It almost seems as if Levy simply does not understand the Polanski case at all. False consciousness certainly helps him take his position, I suppose.
There is a lot of bizarre special pleading going on, especially in Europe, where rape appears not to be considered much of a crime, and flight from justice appears to be OK.
