The Wonders of the French Open
What a great tournament this has been the last couple of years!Sam Stosur made her breakthrough last year by getting to the semis, but she really only had to upset Dementieva to get there. This year she knocked off Henin and Serena! Great stuff! Sam wrote a great blog for the WTA when she played in Toronto last year. I wish her great results.
Meanwhile Robin Soderling, who to a degree gave Federer the French last year by knocking off Nadal, knocked off Federer this year. And Nadal's path looks pretty good now, as does Nadal. I will cheer, mind you, for Soderling, and then for the Austrian upstart making his breakthrough, Juergen Meltzer (who has often played quite well but never got quite here).
Sadly, I will miss the men's semis. The men's semis last year constituted the best day of tennis I have ever seen and introduced us to Juan Martin del Potro and gave a showcase to Fernando Gonzalez.
This year's lineup does not suggest such a day but one never knows!
