How Do You Silence 80,000 People?

If you are Ariane Friedrich, and you are competing in the high jump at the IAAF World Championships in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, you simply put your finger to your lips, and the whole stadium falls dead silent.
And then, when you have lost the event to Blanka Vlasic, and she takes some attempts at a world record height, and she asks for clapping and cheering, you join in and encourage the crowd to support her.
There are some great things in sport.
