Breakfast at the Beach

Today was one of those hideous Toronto winter days, with temperatures just above freezing, and precipitation trying to decide whether to be freezing rain or snow, and a grey fog everywhere. My waterfront walk was along a different route from normal. Of the pictures here the relatively panoramic one at the top should give a feel for this. In the background is the Ashbridge's Bay Water Treatment Plant, a rather odd feature in the current federal election campaign in my riding. An important thing that should be clear from this photograph is that these birds (mostly Canada Geese and mallards) are working very hard. This is breakfast time.

Over in another part of the bay there was the action in the other picture.

In the picture there are mallards, Canada Geese, swans, and (very hard to see) a small crew of what I think were buffleheads (I did not have my binoculars on the walk - you can look at the full-size picture by opening it). Note the number of rear ends stuck in the air, further evidence of the assiduous efforts of feeding in the morning.
