John Hinderaker fisks AFP on Thatcher

The distortions are wonderfully predictable.

What's funny about the AFP's take on the newly-released documents, other than their triviality, is that the facts, as described by AFP, support a conclusion exactly opposite from the one the news agency draws: Britain's Labour government was petty and vindictive in trying to keep Mrs. Thatcher out of the limelight:

And history gave that Labour government just what it deserved for its slimy behaviour.

It is the Labour government, not Mrs. Thatcher, that comes off looking terrible in the documents as described by AFP; yet the "news" agency can see them only as an indictment of the Conservative Prime Minister: "Shrill, publicity-seeking, demanding a good hairdresser." Sad, but typical of the absurd level of liberal bias that we see in our newspapers every day.

A Most Surprising Poster

Now I know there are "American Football" Leagues in Europe, and I knew this even before Doc's excellent recommendation (I have long wanted to see the Vienna Vikings play), but this poster in Cologne caught me utterly off guard.

If I am translating it correctly, it indicated that there is an "American Football" developmental league for women! Do we even have that in North America? Moreover, somebody thinks spectators can be attracted to see the Cologne Falconets play against the Stuttgart Scorpions Sisters.

Regrettably, I arrived in Cologne after this game had completed.

The world is a wonderful place a lot of the time.

Ophelia Loses It (Rightly)

This is just fun (and also enraging - I do hate to think of the total waste of resources pissed away in such endeavours) from start to finish, for anyone who actually cares about what it takes to 'know' something.

Ophelia says, among much else (go read it):

Wordy, jargony, self-admiring, and - clueless. It apparently doesn't even know what 'interstices' means - it seems to think it's a more elegant version of 'intersections.' Anyway, what the hell would an intersection or an interstice 'of epistemology, methodology, metaphysics, ontology, and science and technology studies' be?

...

There's mainstream epistemology, and then there's Feminist Epistemology (except when there are Feminist Epistemologies). To put it another way, there's rational and then there's raving bat-loony. There's even a course in Feminist Theory: Epistemologies of Ignorance. It's about reading memoirs. They use the word 'Epistemologies' in the title so that it will sound more academic-like. Or something.
